HIGH OUTPUT, LOW VISIBILITY

Hello all!

I'm finally getting around to doing a new blog post after several days/ weeks of silence. I'm happy to say that despite my quiet time on the blog, I have been working extremely hard on the aforementioned ZOMBIE SHARK BEAR project, and better yet, it's almost finished! Today I will be publishing a few pieces of test art for the project and will be posting the new chapter that will be included with the book over the next few days to see what you think of it!

Pals with the Big G- The Problem of Evil

Another philosophically/ religion-themed post, this was is my attempt at answering "The Problem of Evil." While the answer to the question is fully formed in my mind, putting it into words has been somewhat difficult, though I think what I've written gets the gist of my idea down. That said, I feel that this piece is a work in process that will need more work to be fully developed.

DUNCAN DOG

Duncan Dog is a short story I wrote several years ago as part of a creative writing class I was in during Junior College. To be completely honest, I wrote this story at the very last minute the day it was due, leaving me barely enough time to produce the copies required for distribution to the class. The reviews of the story were very positive, which is something I have been proud of since. I hope that you enjoy the story and encourage comments on it that I may use to improve future works! I will endeavor to produce more short stories on a somewhat consistent basis, so if you like Duncan Dog please check back again soon!

Pals with the Big G- The Omnipotence Paradox

Today whilst in the midst of some meditation, I came across something called "The Omnipotence Pardox" which asks the question (to summarize the concept of the paradox)-"If God is omnipotent can he create a stone that he cannot lift?"

I thought this was interesting question and after some thought I came to this conclusion...

MY THOUGHTS ON: HYOUKA

Reading manga is probably my favorite hobby and it originally stemmed from my love of anime, however, as the "moe"- fad began to over shadow anime more and more, I came to distance myself from watching anime little by little, until it was several years since I had seriously followed a particular show. The past year or two, I have ventured back in to the realm of Japanese animation to watch shows like Chuunibyo Demo Koi ga Shitai! and Maoyuu, but the shows had to have a particular slant that I found interesting to draw me in- I was hyper critical about the anime I watched and easily dismissive of  shows that I thought had too much "moe."

This attitude has changed over the past month or so following the release of Studio Trigger's new series, Kill la Kill, which has essentially brought me back to watching anime on a regular basis. It was my joy to find that since I had been away, the production house behind Chuunibyo, Kyoto Animation, had created a hefty backlog of shows for me to watch; one of them being the slice-of-life/ mystery series, Hyouka.

Happy New Year's Resolutions!

(Late) Happy New Years, everyone!

After a really busy last part of 2013, I got to take things a little easier in December and get some much needed "me" time. As announced last month, Comic Con is a "go" for Aswembar Productions in 2014 and its time for us to get started on the projects this will entail. From myself, personally, this'll mean a new Zombie Shark Bear Project and a brand new story called about a ninja-wannabe named Jun.  There'll also be some Street Fighter fan art prints and stickers.

GODZILLA Official Trailer

So, it's been a little while since I've done a non-my-own-stuff post, and this is coming a few days late, but the long awaited trailer for the new GODZILLA movie was released on Tuesday.

GREMLIN WORLD 2.0 Part 1

Well, I was going to wait a little bit longer before releasing this since there were some edits that I wanted to do, but I might as well get a general consensus on the work as it is. So, in light of that, I am going to be posting my recently drawn comic which re-introduces the world of GREMLIN WORLD in a much more story-driven fashion. I originally drew this for a manga contest this past summer, but since that doesn't seem to be going anywhere, I guess I'm free to do with it as I please.  I'll be posting this in 4 page installments, it's 20 pages, so we'll see the final pages on Friday, and I'm very interested to hear what readers of both versions think of this reboot, and even if you haven't seen the original, please feel free to check it out!

October Sketch 26- Smug Pai

Surprisingly, I've only done two drawings of Pai during this October Sketch project. This one is kind of random but came out really nice. It was fun to draw her so smug looking.

October Sketch 31- KILLER PEPPER

Picture of Pepper Xombi to go along with the picture of her sister Cafe.

October Sketch 30- Terrible Vigilante Pumpking

A semi-Halloween inspired drawing of a random character I made up called "Pumpking." I will be coloring this illustration soon.

October Sketch 15, 28, and 29- Character Sketches

I realized I actually hadn't posted Day 15's drawing even though I had it done... it was a touch up of Day 14's Constable Crash to be more in line with Icky's art style. I was hoping to have a chance to color it, so I must have forgotten to post it.

The next drawing is a rough sketch of Eric Evans, a character from a book I'm writing. I would like to do something more detailed but he's still work in progress..

Day 29's drawing is a random ogre-type character. I've never really drawing this type of character before, but this was alot of fun, I'm hoping to expand into more creature designs in the future.

October Sketch 27- Destroy This Mad Brute!

Inspired by a World War 1 military propaganda poster and similar illustrations from the film Pacific Rim (which you can see in Guillermo Del Toro's Director's Notebook section on the Blu Ray), I started with a simple picture of Rolo with no idea behind it. As I colored it, it took a life of its own and became this.

October Sketch 25- A Skull

So, some reviews of some of my earlier pictures prompted me to revisit them, but I was unsatisfied with how they were turning out, so I decided to go back and better re-familiarize myself with the shapes of the face. The process is ongoing, but in the hopes of gaining more feed back I decided to freehand this skull as a milestone to try and see what I can do after a few hours of study.  I do feel that I have a better understanding of how things are put together, but of course, I will be doing more work on this. The teeth are totally unrealistically proportioned though, just cause I wanted to draw them that way.

October Sketch 24- Rhapsodies In Color

Yesterday's artwork. Felt like doing an art deco cityscape, just to switch it up.

October Sketch 23- Rabbit

A rabbit. I used to have a small rabbit character I would draw usually as a warm up back in high school, I guess this is sort of a revisit of that character, it was also very easy to draw on a day where the ideas weren't being forthcoming. Fun and easy.

October Sketch 22- Hardass

The idea for this picture was to draw a hard-boiled cop type character and to do something with more realistic proportions. I'm pleased with the results even though he has some really chunky hands, especially since I actually gave him fingernails, which I usually avoid because they look odd on illustrated characters to me. I really like the way the color on his face came out, but may try to rework the background in to something more engaging in the future.

October Sketch 21- Komodo Dragon Zombie

First pass at the Komodo Dragon Zombie for ZOMBIE SHARK BEAR. Definitely a rough pass more to get some basic ideas down, I think the next go will be more a bit more animalistic. I do want to make it more gory, but since the art for ZSB is simplistic I need to figure out where I want to add the gore but keep the simple character silhouettes. Definitely needs some work to push it from 'lizard-man' to 'lizard-zombie.'

October Sketch 19: KILLER CAFE

Here's a fun piece I did of GREMLIN WORLD's Cafe Xombi, Pepper's genius sister. This illustration was a ton of fun to draw and was inspired by a recent Smile Precure fan art I randomly saw this weekend.

October Sketch 20: Freddy

The line art for a picture of legendary front man Freddy Mercury from my favorite classic rock band Queen. I've wanted to do a Freddy-themed piece for ages, but this is the only one that I've been satisfied with. A color version will be coming up as soon as I get the time to paint this.

October Sketch 17 and 18: Revolver Ocelot and Something Else

Some random sketches I did for October Sketch, these two didn't really have too much thought behind them. I've been resisting doing fan art for a little while, but I felt like drawing Revolver Ocelot from Metal Gear one night. I really need to hunker down and brush up on my realistic anatomy. The other drawing was pretty random and was done in only a few minutes. I've been playing a lot of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure All Star Battle, so I think this is channeling some Araki-ness

OctoberSketch 16 MIO

Following up Icky and Constable Crush, Mio join the gang! Another new character I'm not too sure what to do with yet, but I'll think of something.

October Sketch 14: Constable Crash

Following up on Icky/Iggy/Yvonne from yesterday comes Constable Crush, another citizen from Icky's realm.

October Sketch 13: Icky

A random character I just made up. Her name might end up being Icky. Not sure yet... any suggestions?

October Sketch 12: Pai's laugh

Took my favorite panel from my web comic Gremlin World and decided to redraw and color it in the current style of the comic.

EDIT: For good measure, I added the page that this was adapted from.

Today's post is of the evil ninja, Karasu, who will be the central antagonist in my upcoming comic staring the wanna-be ninja, Jun.

October Sketch Days 9 and 10

A couple random drawings for October Sketch Days 9 and 10. Day 8 is a WIP  that you can see here, so I'll be posting that when I'm satisfied with it.

Zombies and Ghosts

Good morning, all! Today I'm just going to post an update on the Mirai drawing I did for Day 2 of October Sketch. I added some color and shading and I like the way the texture brush adds to the original art.

Hope you like it, too. Also, a friend of mine, LA Virrey, introduced this animation short, Gisoku no Moses,  to me yesterday which is very cute, but has a somewhat abruptly melancholic ending. Still, much respect for Gagame, the creator of this short. Looking forward to more of their work down the line, and even if you watch the video here, please visit their Vimeo page to show support for the original artist!

GISOKU NO MOSES by GAGAME

OctoberSketch 7: Jun

Jun is a character from a new comic I'll be working on in December or January. She's a girl who wants to be a ninja, but is terrible at it. i really like the way Jun's attitude came out in the drawing, but her costume isn't very wannabe ninja-ish, so she's still got some development to go through. Otherwise, I like this alot.

Back in black... and other colors, too!

Hey everyone!

I know it's been kind of quiet on this front, but as evidenced by the daily October Sketch posts I'm getting back on track and there should be plenty of regular updates to come!

Octobersketch 6: Skull Moon

Another Zombie Shark Bear piece, this time of the villain, Skull of the Shadow Clan, doing what ninjas do best- sulking on some place really high.

Saturday, October 5, 2013

Octobersketch 5: Yak

Today's drawing is called "Yak"- because it's a surly looking Yakuza guy. I kind of wanted to make it more obnoxious looking but couldn't get it to look right.

OctoberSketch Day 4- Zombie Shark Bear

It's been a while since I drew Mirai in her monster form, it was fun. Seems like ZSB is my fall back topic to draw whenever anything else doesn't work, but it's always fun to do more work for that project, so don't see a problem there.

October Sketch Day 3-- A Fox

Got a request for a drawing of a fox today. So I drew one because I don't draw animals that often.

October Sketch Day 2- Mirai Samekuma

Today's (Yesterday's) drawing is a quick drawing of ZOMBIE SHARK BEAR heroine, Mirai Samekuma!

DOODLE-A-DAY 1: MITTS MALONE

Doing a drawing-a-day challenge. My first entry is this guy, Mitts Malone. The uber-burly type guys aren't my normal schtick, but I like the way he came out.

Gremlin World: Pepper sketch

So, I got Manga Studio a few days ago, and after playing around in it for a while and updating my tablet drivers I managed to come up with this drawing of Pepper in about 20 minutes. Not bad, let's see how practical it is in the long run...

Art Exhibition- STREET FIGHTER

This past weekend, during San Diego Comic Con 2013, there was an art exhibit held by local San Diego artists on a topic that is near and dear to my heart: STREET FIGHTER. The exhibit (lovingly titled Can You Defeat Sheng Long?) lasted only one evening, which was incidentally my birthday, on July 19th.

MY THOUGHTS ON: THE LONE RANGER

I've always had an appreciation for the stereotypical, old school American Hero; Captain America, Superman (most of the time), and Indiana Jones are some of my favorite fictional characters ever and I really love the idealism and staunch morality behind them. One of the oldest of these characters is The Lone Ranger, who has been resurrected by Disney in a new film by the team behind The Pirates of The Caribbean franchise.

I saw it, and these are my thoughts on it.

As always, SPOILERS FOLLOW.

GREMLIN WORLD- JET HONOU

Another up-and-coming character from GREMLIN WORLD, today we're giving you a look at Jet Honou.
