THOUGHTS ON: MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE DAREDEVIL

So, it feels like it's been twelve million years since I last wrote one of these opinion posts that wasn't religiously skewed, but really, that's just how good Marvel Studios and Netflix's new Daredevil series is. I even did fan art!

If you're looking for a full-fledged review of the series, you can find those at many other sites. This post is more of me just gushing about the series and a basic run down of my favorite parts of the show.

1. The Black Costume-

As soon as the Matt Murdock's black costume was revealed last year, the question everyone was asking was where was his iconic red costume and what would it look like? Despite poor reviews on the film itself, Ben Affleck's Daredevil costume was actually pretty good looking, so how the new version would compare was a pretty hot topic.

But I actually really like the super basic black costume Charlie Cox's Murdock sports for the majority of the series. It really drives home that Daredevil is a street-class hero and sets him apart from Iron Man and Captain America. I also appreciate the callback to Daredevil's original live action appearance in The Trail of The Incredible Hulk, which continues the MCU's reverence to the series started in the previous MCU film, The Incredible Hulk.

2. The Leads-

I really, really enjoy Charlie Cox's take on the often-conflicted character Matt Murdock. There's a good mix of vulnerability, compassion and conviction in the performance that really underscore's Murdock's need to be Daredevil. I also enjoyed his chemistry with his supporting cast, especially co-star Elden Henson's Foggy Nelson.

Of course, I can't not talk about Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk, whose multi-layered portrayal of the character make him as relatable as our hero. Even though Fisk is the primary antagonist of the series, it's still painful watching him lose so much as the story progresses. Another nice touch was introducing the character in a scene showcasing his social awkwardness and having a slow build to his first villainous scene.

3. The Sidekicks-

Really, I think I would have liked to put this topic above the leads because, for me, it was the side kick characters that really stood out and built up their respective sides of the story.

Foggy really brings the humanity to Murdock that keeps him from being too brooding and too distant from the people he's protecting. The conflict between himself and Murdock is also handled really well and I was pleased that it played out the way it did.

On the villain side of things, Kingpin has his own confident in James Wesley, his savvy secretary played by Toby Leonard Moore, whose wholehearted and genuine care and devotion to his boss makes the character really endearing despite his evil bent. To be honest, Wesley is my favorite character from the series and is definitely in my top 5 favorite MCU characters.

4. The Big Picture-

Like all things related to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Daredevil references the world's history and sows the seeds of it's future. Daredevil's journalist ally, Ben Urich's office features framed newspaper clips recalling scenes from The Incredible Hulk and The Avengers. Later episodes tease directions for future Daredevil adventures and feature hints at characters that have yet to appear. Even Daredevil's bandanna is worn in similar style to future hero Iron Fist's costume.

5. The Fights-

Finally, the action choreography in Daredevil follows a very close second to the action in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, making fights visceral and realistic. The anything-goes-style of the fights further sets this series apart from the rest of the MCU; even on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D fights focus much more on martial arts and putting foes down in as few hits as possible, in Daredevil, we get normal guys fighting normal guys and it really adds to the girt of the series.

All in all, Daredevil was an amazing production and really stands out even amongst the incredible pedigree of Marvel Studios' projects. The series is long and rich enough to really savor, but also short enough to warrant multiple viewings. Definitely a series well worth your time, whether viewing it a few episodes at a time, or as a binge watching affair.

Pals with the Big G Day 4: Enjoy Everything

While I do like writing about my faith and my thoughts on it, it gets difficult to think of something to write about everyday and sometimes I don't even feel like writing. So today I'm just going to write about things I enjoy.

PALS WITH THE BIG G: Ash Wednesday 2015

It's been a long while since I've posted anything on this blog and for that I apologize.

I don't know how many people actually keep up with my blog posts (though it's not really that difficult to track), but if you are a regular reader, please know that though I have not been updating my status here on a regular basis, my life has been anything but dull.

ZOMBIE SHARK BEAR and GREMLIN WORLD are both being regularly published on Tapastic and soon my Tumblr, Aswembar (Nom Nom Art Collective) has been cleared for a table at the San Diego Comic Con again, and my writing collaborator and I have been hard at work on a brand new short story we hope to have out in time for summer.

I've also been attending regular art meet ups, keeping up with Spider-Verse, Endgame, and one of my new favorite comics, Boku no Hero Academia, and watching The Flash, Agent Carter, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, and Log Horizon. Guilty Gear Xrd has taken up a pretty good chunk of time, as well. I've even been able to try a slew of new restaurants and exotic new foods- needless to say, I have not been bored.

That said, the Lenten season is upon us again, and I've decided to revisit my daily blog post project that brought me a lot of enjoyment back in 2013. I feel like I have grown a lot as a person since that last project both in my faith and as a person, and so I think further reflection will take me on to bigger and brighter things.

PALS WITH THE BIG G: The need for reflection

It has been a while since I've had a chance to post regularly on my blog, something that I am very sorry to my followers for; but my artwork has actually been making progress on a regular basis over at Tapastic and I'm happy to say that we are approaching the half way point of Zombie Shark Bear Episode 1 (something that seemed so far away just a few months ago).

I intend to post ZSB here on the blog soon with some extra commentary. Also, I'll be posting that late review of Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist when the blu ray comes out, but I would definitely suggest watching it if you get the chance.

Anyway, as this is a "Pals with the Big G" post, it's going to be religion related, so if that's not really your thing this is the head's up- though I do think that mindful consideration of others' point of view is a good thing to consider (I certainly have gained from it).

Breaking ground on Episode 1

After literal YEARS in development, I'm very excited to say that I have begun work on Zombie Shark Bear Episode 1. The title of the chapter will be "Break The Skin" and it will begin serialization on TAPASTIC on July 6th, just before the San Diego Comic Con 2014 and the tail end of Anime Expo 2014. It will also be posted to my Deviant Art website the following day.

As for the currently updating Episode 0, I will be posting it on this blog beginning June 16th, and it will see daily updates through July 2nd to coincide with the post date of the final page on Tapastic! I will also be including little bits of commentary with these posts that you won't see with the Tapastic or Deviant Art versions of the pages, just to give a little incentive to check out the blog!

There's a lot of new info coming up in the next few weeks, my next post will be reviewing the Street Fighter web series, Assassin's Fist; so please check it out!! I'll leave you all with the cover for Episode 1 of Zombie Shark Bear, just get things going!

MY THOUGHTS ON: HYOUKA

Reading manga is probably my favorite hobby and it originally stemmed from my love of anime, however, as the "moe"- fad began to over shadow anime more and more, I came to distance myself from watching anime little by little, until it was several years since I had seriously followed a particular show. The past year or two, I have ventured back in to the realm of Japanese animation to watch shows like Chuunibyo Demo Koi ga Shitai! and Maoyuu, but the shows had to have a particular slant that I found interesting to draw me in- I was hyper critical about the anime I watched and easily dismissive of  shows that I thought had too much "moe."

This attitude has changed over the past month or so following the release of Studio Trigger's new series, Kill la Kill, which has essentially brought me back to watching anime on a regular basis. It was my joy to find that since I had been away, the production house behind Chuunibyo, Kyoto Animation, had created a hefty backlog of shows for me to watch; one of them being the slice-of-life/ mystery series, Hyouka.

GODZILLA Official Trailer

So, it's been a little while since I've done a non-my-own-stuff post, and this is coming a few days late, but the long awaited trailer for the new GODZILLA movie was released on Tuesday.

Zombies and Ghosts

Good morning, all! Today I'm just going to post an update on the Mirai drawing I did for Day 2 of October Sketch. I added some color and shading and I like the way the texture brush adds to the original art.

Hope you like it, too. Also, a friend of mine, LA Virrey, introduced this animation short, Gisoku no Moses,  to me yesterday which is very cute, but has a somewhat abruptly melancholic ending. Still, much respect for Gagame, the creator of this short. Looking forward to more of their work down the line, and even if you watch the video here, please visit their Vimeo page to show support for the original artist!

MY THOUGHTS ON: THE LONE RANGER

I've always had an appreciation for the stereotypical, old school American Hero; Captain America, Superman (most of the time), and Indiana Jones are some of my favorite fictional characters ever and I really love the idealism and staunch morality behind them. One of the oldest of these characters is The Lone Ranger, who has been resurrected by Disney in a new film by the team behind The Pirates of The Caribbean franchise.

I saw it, and these are my thoughts on it.

As always, SPOILERS FOLLOW.

MY THOUGHTS ON: THE MAN OF STEEL

I mentioned in my last article that two movies I had been waiting for were coming out last week and since I've already covered This Is The End, I figure it's time for me to write about The Man of Steel.

Yeah, spoilers.

MY THOUGHTS ON: THIS IS THE END

There are many movies I'm looking forward to this summer, and two of them just so happened to come out this week. Of course, one of those films is The Man of Steel, the other is This Is The End, a film I have been waiting for since the day I saw the first trailer. It's a film that has that random, sarcastic, raunchy humor which I find particularly funny, and if you've liked any of the films in the Evan Goldberg or Judd Apatow pantheon, you'll like This Is The End.

MY THOUGHTS ON: THE DARK KNIGHT

Christopher Nolan's now legendary film, The Dark Knight, was originally released back in 2008 to acclaim from both critics and viewers alike. Much has been said about it since then, so why do a review now?

At this point, I don't think it's something I need to worry about, but Spoilers are ahead.

My Favorite 80's Cartoon Intros

Now that I'm using advanced technology to embed videos into my blog posts, I thought I'd go out on a lark and do a random post listing my top 10 cartoon intros from the 1980's. These are the opening sequences that either fostered my love for the medium of animation or are shows I have gone back and watched and left an impression on me. With each video I'll be providing a brief explanation about what in particular I enjoyed about each intro, and a great big thanks to the fellow fans who uploaded these videos!

Of course, I'll put my disclaimer here stating that I do not own any of these intellectual properties and they are copyright to their individual owners.

MY THOUGHTS ON: Iron Man 3

Okay, it's been a while since I've sat down to write something, but today's been pretty good so I think we'll cap it off with a new post. A post about the new Iron Man film- 'Iron Man 3.' You've probably already seen it or at least know someone who has, but I will tell you up front, if you are any type of action/ adventure/ science fiction/ comic book film fan, you should've seen it by now. Seriously, go do it now.

Oh yeah, SPOILERS AHEAD.

PALS WITH THE BIG G: Day 16

Today at church we discussed how God is always with us at all times and in all things. That he is a universal existence.
